Join BuxMont DSA each Monday at 7:00pm for our weekly virtual political education program! Each session will include a live reading of a relatively short, accessible article or other piece of media that encourages us to think strategically about the challenges socialists face in our struggle to build a better world. Because we read articles aloud together, interspersed with open discussion, no homework is necessary!
This week we will read and discuss Marco Rosaire Rossi’s essay “The Legalization of Affordable Housing” published in Midwest Socialist, the publication run by Midwestern chapters of DSA. Rossi presents an accessible history of Chicago’s zoning laws that have contributed to the city’s racial inequalities and uneven economic development. We’ll consider how both neoliberal calls for gentrification and NIMBY calls for universal downzoning, while seemingly antagonistic, impose a similar and dangerous norm of austerity in urban politics.
